It is with much regret that after 24 years of playing cricket for Cherry Hinton I have decided to make myself unavailable for selection. The drive from Felixstowe is just to far especially as I still have to do the journey Monday to Friday.
I have thoroughly enjoyed my time with the club and wish you all the best for the future and I am hoping for a speedy return to a level more befitting this club.

Some highlights from my life with Cherries -

Watching as a child the awesome bowling attack of the late eighties of Clive Taylor, Bill Samson, Rob Custerson, Ian Goddard, Simon Rapley and Wally blower - I suspect never to be beaten as an all round bowling attach of pace, hostility, swing, seam movement and guile.

Russell Bacon going off for rain on 99 not out and refusing the oppositions offer to go back out and bowl 1 underarm to get him to his ton.

Martyn Livermore smashing a ton+ inside 15, 8 ball overs

My own hundred way back in 1994

Steve Deningtons celebrations when reaching his maiden 100.

Under inspired captaincy (or an act of lunacy on my part?) promoting Winker to open the batting and watching him slog his way passed 3 figures.

And of course the famous Alan Burge team talk!

I could go on.

The most impressive and enjoyable part of playing cricket on a Saturday afternoon for me has always been the great team spirit that this club has always produced, and from my 1 game this year it is clearly as strong as ever.

Good luck for the rest of the season and beyond

Karl

Karl, so sorry to hear of your decision, but fully understandable. As current Chairman of the club, fellow cherry and friend, I'd just like to say a big thank you to you for your great contribution to the club over the years.
Your batting was always entertaining, your bowling 'interesting', your spirit undaunting, your enthusiasm infectious and your winding up of opposition legendary, obviously learnt from your old man. Your keeping was undoubtedly your strength and indeed won us many a game, your fearless approach making batsmen realise that they could not afford to give you just a glimmer of hope or they'd quickly be on their way back to the hutch.
Along with many other players, I can remember some great performances from you and the club will be poorer as a result. You have been sorely missed behind the stumps recently and perhaps if we'd had you in our side, we may still be in a much higher division.
Just remember that you are welcome at the club at any time.
Every good wish for the future mate. Hope to see you around sometime
Regards
Steve

Well, Karl, I think Bill Sansom was a bit earlier than late 80's but must say I was a little disappointed I didn't creep into the bowling line up. Surely I fit into some of those catagories?.
Anyway, although we hoped you would play more games when you moved to the coast I suppose we all realised it was unlikely. However you have managed to play once this season and we all saw the benefit of having you there, as a wicket keeper and motivator. I even remember the wonderful drive you played to the boundary, and remember thinking to myself "Don't get carried away Karl!" I think we both knew what to expect next.
It was good to read through your memories and as you say even when things haven't been good on the field, we have usually managed to enjoy ourselves either taking the piss out of each other or more often the opposition.
Almost all of my best bowling for the Cherries has been done with a Wilks behind the stumps, whether it be your Dad or you. Both were able to stand up to my bowling which gave me a great advantage and I appreciate how you both helped me take many wickets.
I always valued your input as keeper when I captained the side.
You will certainly be missed and I'm not taking you off the list of registered players as you can never say never!
We need you to work on Archie as a keeper as until he is ready this will mean Steve will have to prolong his career further as a keeper. He has certainly learned a good deal from you and Dad, although probably needs to work on his sledging.
Anyway I'm sure we will keep in touch and hope to see you at Quy sometime even if only to watch.

wilko i know ur getting on a bit but i think the Alzheimer's has finally started to kick in.i am very hurt by the term slog in regards to my one and only classical three figure score.my recollection of the glorious occasion is that it was full of flowing cover drives, imperious cuts and pulls and subtle leg glances.i think you must be getting confused with your own one and only scoring shot, the infamous moooo to cow corner.
on a serious note though mate ,it has been a pleasure to play along side you on many occasions.we have had many a good laugh, many a good wind up and many a pint of lager[even though you always managed to avoid paying for any of them]
enjoy your retirement now you have moved to the arse end of nowhere, dont worry too much though bud, sooner or later they will get running water and electricity to your part of the world.
love winker

Winker???? How come now you have left us, you now start posting on the website. Great to hear from you and yes didn't we have some laughs, usually at the oppositions expense (or Smokey)
